| Derek Rowan is a
life member and past Fire Chief of the
Greater Springfield Volunteer Fire
Department in Fairfax County. He’s received
many awards for his service to the citizens
of Fairfax County as a volunteer firefighter
and officer. He’s been the Fairfax County
Firefighter of the Year, Fairfax County
Officer of the Year, and has received
several commendations from the Fairfax
County Board of Supervisors for his
performance of duty. He also has been a
firefighter instructor for over seventeen
years teaching several area jurisdictions
basic and advanced firefighter, officer, and

Emergency Response Experience
Mr. Rowan has been a
firefighter for over 18 years. He has commanded
engine companies, ladder truck companies, heavy
rescue companies and ambulances on thousands of
9-1-1 emergency calls in one of the busiest
jurisdictions in the country. During the September
11th terrorist attacks, Mr. Rowan commanded an
engine company throughout the entire Northern
Virginia metropolitan area for four days.
Mr. Rowan was a Rescue
Specialist for nine years with Virginia Task Force
1, one of the FEMA and OFDA Urban Search and Rescue
Task Forces. He responded to many calls for service
into collapsed structures around the country
including Hurricane Andrew, Hurricane Fran, the
Northridge Earthquake, and Oklahoma City Bombing.
